old friends

April 23, 2009

There are a lot of people I think of getting in touch with.  Ashley from my undergrad lab, who I’ll always regret not being more forward with.  Jessica from high school, who I trade the occasional lj comment with, and Mike Dulbs who always forgets to call me back and I’ve finally taken as a sign that he’s not sincere in wanting to see me when I’m in town.  Nate, Adam, Marcie, Julie, and more, these people have floated out of my life.  I do miss them, and I wish we still talked, but I don’t bother to do much.  Thing is, I’m terrible at keeping things up from far away.  I trade a few facebook messages, or a couple of phone calls, and then I forget to reply.  I’ve gone through awkward periods of a couple months trying to keep it up, but I never do.  It’s a shame, because these people would be wonderful to still know well.  Some of them I still read ljs from, and occasionally I stroll by a facebook page to see what’s up, but mostly they’re out of my life.
I do wonder, in future moves, how many of these people will I end up sharing a city with, and with how many of them will I reconnect.

See, that’s the key – eventually, if you know enough people, you reach steady state where you have friends everywhere! :)
