depression question

November 10, 2008

Just curious, anyone know what to call it when someone has all the symptoms of a major depressive episode but they only last half as long as one of those?

You mean lasting one week instead of, say, two? Seems like two is the minimum duration I found online. Although I have no idea how they come up with a minimum duration for it to be an ‘episode.’ Beats me. I shall call it a ‘minor’ depressive episode then.

    If it’s recurrent, wikipedia says…

In my line of work you either meet criteria for a Major Depressive Episode (MDE) or you don’t. All of the questions I ask pertain to symptoms occurring over the past two weeks, particularly feeling depressed or down most of the day nearly every day or feeling much less interested in most of the things you used to enjoy, most of the time. Frequency and severity is key.
