brick walls

April 9, 2008

Brick walls are there to allow you to show how much you want it. What a fantastic thought. There’s this guy, Randy Pausch, who just retired as a prof at Carnegie Mellon. He didn’t retire because he’s old, but because he’s dying of cancer. He gave this lecture before he left, address really to his young children, and he says that brick walls are there to let you prove yourself. That a brick wall weeds out people who aren’t willing to figure out how to get past it, and you ought to see it as an opportunity to showcase yourself.
He also has a love affair of Disneyland, and says he doesn’t know how to have not have fun. Now this is a guy who knows how to live his life. How ironic that he’ll be dying young.
Read the lecture. It starts off a little slow, but I found it really an amazing read, and it didn’t take nearly as long as I feared. He’s got some wonderful things to say.

Yeah there’s no sound on the compy in my office, so I had to settle for reading. Maybe I’ll watch part of it tonight at home…
