Patrioit

February 4, 2008

An interesting observation on the Super Bowl. There was that great (albeit with some oddities) short of the reading of the Declaration of Independence, which I thought was really neat. Then the national anthem was sung…and everyone at our party got up during it to get food. Do people not stop to watch that performed anymore?

    On kitsch.
“Do people not stop to watch that performed anymore?”
This from the girl who misspells “patriot.” :-p
But no, not really. The national anthem is a tradition that’s supposed to evoke memories of America’s grand history (whatever little there is, comparatively). Singing it with all the vapid embellishment of a trendy American Idol winner trying to impress the shutter-happy townsfolk is like slathering a Christmas tree in gold paint.
