Smoky skies

October 26, 2007

It really must have been worse elsewhere all week. I’m sure a lot of you have been watching our fires on the national news, and sounds like a disaster, right? It sounds like we’re all huddling at home in terror as gigantic flames burn right nearby and smoke fills the air.
Yeah basically not so much. Sunday night was really the only scary time here. Monday and the first half of Tuesday were pretty dang smoky, but that just meant we ate lunch indoors rather than out in the park. Other than that, here in Irvine life has been basically normal. A few people wore face masks to class. Ash flutters down now and again, looking like lost snowflakes. Yesterday there must have been smoke in the upper atmosphere, because it was clear down here but the sunlight had the tone of sunset all day.
I really don’t understand. Right now the NYTimes has an article that leads with “While life began returning to normal in parts of southern California today, firefighters continued to battle several large blazes that still threatened more than 20,000 homes.” Life is beginning to return to normal? Seemed pretty dang normal to me. Ionno. I guess this is me getting first hand experience in the fact that the media likes to create disasters.

Maybe it seemed normal because your house wasn’t burning down

Haha yeah this is true. I think God watched me write that, because there might be another fire starting right now near me. It looks like the mountain is glowing…
